For past few years VoIP has been simmering up but could not get a good push due to some reasons but now the market has heated up and VoIP is in headings. Millions have rightly identified the benefits for them and their businesses through VoIP. They are jumping into this feature rich technology and cutting their communication cost considerably. VoIP service is now mature enough to compete with PBX and other services on every platform.
Wireless VoIP are widely used in different businesses where there is a need for workers to stay in continuous contact. These businesses can be hospitals, workers on multi floor and buildings, different departments located differently or other fragmented workforce like mobile workers. VoIP is cost effective than mobile phones and efficient than pagers previously used for this purpose. Companies can replace obsolete phone services to equip themselves and their workers with a technology which is better and inexpensive. In this competitive environment companies are bound to reduce their costs so as to stay in business, VoIP is surely a good offer for them.
The time when Voice over Internet Protocol was introduced it faced some real problems. Due to lack of technology fast internet service was not available, which is the basic requirement of VoIP to work properly. Dial-up connection was initially used which did not provide enough speed to communicate speech properly, so calls dropped very often during conversation and even voice was not clear. But thanks to broadband technology which made smooth calls possible.
Another drawback was the absence of service during power failure. Due to power breakdown internet connection does not work which eventually results in no VoIP service. Compared to it landline never face such problem, even if electricity collapses, telephone keeps working. To cope up with this drawback service providers are managing systems with power backups, which makes it possible for the user to avail service round the clock without any interruption.
Then there are complaints that not all VoIP service providers facilitate emergency 911 calls 24/7. The calls are at times mistakenly routed to wrong places and numbers. The Federal Communication Commission has made it compulsory to provide e911 service by default. A user must not have to request for this facility but it must be mandatory with every connection.
Despite few drawbacks draw backs in the past (which are almost covered by the vendors), VoIP is emerging as a serious threat to local phone companies. In the meetings of executives and managers of Landline companies, they are looking for ways to retain their market share. But they look helpless, of the reason that they cannot compete with VoIP in the prices offered. Landline is too expensive compared to the call rates and services offered by Voice over internet protocol service providers. If this situation continues and conventional service providers are unable to find out any suitable solution to retain their market share and profits; the time is not very far when landline phone service will something belonging to past and the only telephone service would be Internet Phone (also known as broadband phone).
