Uniden and Microsoft launch VoIP for Win IM

You may have heard about how wireless electronics manufacturer Uniden teamed up with Vonage, a VoIP service provider to release the Uniden UIP1869V, a 5.8GHz digital expandable cordless broadband phone system.

Well Uniden’s done it again—working with Microsoft Corporation to create another digital cordless phone that can take both traditional and Internet calls. The 5.8GHz digital cordless phone bundles VoIP telephony with a landline and comes with three calling choices: free PC-to-PC calling through Windows Live Messenger allowing users to place and receive voice calls; MCI Web Calling offering Windows Live Messenger users a lower-cost PC-to-phone outbound calling option; and traditional landline phone service.

Uniden President Rich Tosi says, “The integrated WIN 1200 will continue to raise the bar in voice communications by allowing VoIP and a traditional landline to co-exist, expanding a variety of telephony options to consumers in a single unit.”

The phone is designed to complement the Windows Live Messenger service (now in Beta, but with a full version planned for release late this year). It displays the contact list so you can immediately see your friends’ online status and then place the call. You can even arrange three way Internet conference calls.

The phone signals another breakthrough in VoIP by freeing you from having to be tied down to the PC to make a call. The features are very user-friendly, too. The phone connects to the computer with a USB cord, and comes with integrated sound for a more life like sound. There’s a speakerphone, a full color LCD screen, and soft key menu options and joystick navigation.
