My former boss was a frequent traveler. Whenever there were international conferences of interest, he would be sure to go abroad to attend. However, leaving the office always posed some difficulties for our hands-on manager. He would always find the need to call the office to check on the progress of our various projects (and he also likes getting in touch with his kids every now and then)
Things were quite expensive before we decided to integrate VoIP in our office telephone switch system. Since we were a bunch of techies anyway, we decided not to go for the commercial VoIP offerings, but instead patched up our PABX with our VoIP accounts using a server we set up with open source specifications like Asterisk.
Things got so cool when everything was set up. Not only can our boss call us wherever he was (wait, this doesn’t sound so cool), we could now receive calls from popular VoIP networks like Skype and FWD on our office telephone sets—no need to use computers. What’s more, when we set up our very own direct international dialing (DID) number we were able to receive calls using numbers issued from our countries of choice. So our clients in the UK need only call us on a UK-number, bringing cost savings on their end. Same goes with our Hong Kong clients, and so on.
Come to think of it, with this setup, anyone from any country can setup a number from any country that supports DID routing into VoIP. The call would then be routed to his own VoIP client or telephone network. This is the bread and butter of a lot of offshored business process operations such as call centers and customer relations management firms.
