Third generation—or “3G”—telecommunications was talk of the town more than three years ago, when telecommunications companies planned to offer high-bandwidth applications such as videoconferencing and on-demand videos. Telcos were set to upgrade their existing digital cellular infrastructure to support the bandwidth required, and went into marketing wars with competitors for mindshare.
To date, 3G still has not established a foothold on the mobile phone using populace because many are still happy with their existing digital mobile phones. 3G phones were also initially very expensive, and what’s worse is that there is still no one standard for 3G networking. Several standards exist in different countries, and the handsets using one 3G standard could not work in a different network.
With the onset of Voice-over-Internet Protocol, 3G may already be passé. VoIP can work with any WiFi network over a high speed Internet connection. This basically renders unnecessary the need for a new mobile infrastructure. The voice calls, video, and data can go through the Interent instead! What’s best is that VoWiFi, as VoIP over wireless networking is usually called, can be set up and run for free or a minimal cost.
