Mobile phones today are altogether different animals. They’re convergence machines—it is not uncommon to see phones that have built-in digital cameras and MP3 players. Many phones now also let you have full internet access over the cellular network with built-in web browsers. And with the release of new WiFi-enabled VoIP phones, you can now bypass your cellular network and make calls for a fraction of what the cellular network charges you (or even free).
Telecommunications companies have considered waging a war with VoIP providers because the very existence of an alternative means to make and receive calls is a possible threat to the industry. However, seeing this as possibly an exercise in futility, many have opted to join the VoIP bandwagon instead, both by offering VoIP services to endusers, and as well by routing regular cellular calls through the Internet, instead of the traditional international gateway facilities, hence translating to cost-savings.
I believe the next logical step for mobile handset manufacturers would be to include WiFi and VoIP capabilities with each model they plan to design and manufacture. This would allow endusers seamless connectivity whether through the traditional cellular network, or whenever a WiFi hotspot is available and accessible, through VoIP. And this would give telcos an incentive to look for new business models involving WiFi and VoIP.
