Reviews & Comparisons of VoIP Providers

Skype targets mainstream consumers

Skype, the popular VoIP service that offers free computer to computer calling over the internet is going to make a play for the mainstream IP telephony market. The company recently announced a number of new products at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
Skype’s move is quite expected. Being one of the most prominent services on the internet that offers VoIP, it has no choice but to expand to other markets to sustain its growth. Of course, it is but natural that it taps the market it knows best.
Skype announced several new products that it developed in partnership with consumer electronics manufacturers that will make using its internet phone service so much easier for people. The company also announced a new service that it will launch with Kodak. This will combine live voice conversations and photo sharing.
The newly announced products from Skype are designed to help make the company more competitive with the traditional phone service companies as well as other popular VoIP services like Vonage. Its new cordless phones will help users finally “detach” the service away from their desktops, while their new adapters can help make it easier for consumers to switch between calls over ordinary landline telephones and calls that travel over the internet.

The entry of Skype will surely drive competition among VoIP providers to the next level. Of course, a fierce competition will only result in a further lowering of prices and further innovations both in the technology and the gadgetry itself in a bid to dominate the market share. This will, of course, be welcome news to consumers as they will be the first recipients of the benefits of this competition for market dominance.
