Sipgate has recently announced the rollout of its enhanced VoIP service. The company can now provide 01 and 02 phone numbers from more than 600 along with its VoIP offering the covers practically the whole of the UK. About 40 remaining area codes in rural areas will be added in the next few weeks according to company information.
Subscribers to broadband may decide to take advantage of a free VoIP line provided by Sipgate along with a real phone number that matches their location. Sipgate is available either as a replacement for an existing land line or as second line available at the consumer’s disposal. The line service that Sipgate provides is free of charge. Calls among Sipgate subscribers worldwide are free of charge, as well as called to about one million VoIP subscribers of its eleven national and international partner networks. Subscribers can of course call traditional land lines at the rate of as low as 0.59 pence a minute.
From its initial inception in January 2004, Sipgate has been able to provision more than 60,000 lines in Europe and it is working hard to gain a significant market share in the European VoIP market.
Sipgate welcomes the open approach to VoIP technology as it knows this is what consumers respond to best. But it has also expressed apprehension about anti-competitive measures as it feels that consumers will not be able to benefit much from VoIP technology in this manner.
I welcome the attitude of companies like Sipgate, who has the best interests of the consumer in mind. Because if you think about it, VoIP is just a more modern bridge between families – like a mother wanting to hear the voice of her child living far away.
