News and Reviews on VoIP

Internet Calls

The internet is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. The World Wide Web bridges the entire world, connecting the millions around the world with its virtual threads. Among the greatest contributions that were developed in the field of communications.

Our species needs to keep in touch with our loved ones. With the expanding world structure, many members of our family were migrating to other countries. There began to be a need for us to be able to get in touch with them more easily.

The internet calls were a logical tool to develop. First there was electronic mail messaging. Everyone was glad that there was an alternative to the old fashioned hand written mail delivery system.

Then instant messaging was born. Suddenly you could chat with your family and friends no matter where they were in the world immediately. You just needed to catch each other online and make sure your typing skills could keep up with your thoughts. It still didn’t compare though to actually hearing the voice of your friends and carrying a real conversation.

Thanks to some great inventors who heard of our need, we now have internet calls. Better known as Voice over Internet Protocols or VoIP, calls are made utilizing a combination of audio and video transmitted over the internet. Instead of the regular telephone, you could now use your personal computer or laptop and a headset to speak with anyone in the world.

Sounds simple? Yes it is. There are a few things that you do have to keep in mind though.

First off, the quality of an internet call is dependent on your internet connection. The faster your connection is, the better the chances of carrying a clear conversation. Too slow and your conversation will end up choppy.

Secondly, not all VoIP services are created equal. There are many companies trying to provide the service to you. You need to keep an eye out for the one that will provide the best quality of calls at the lowest possible rates. The last thing you want is to end up paying for a subscription that you can’t use. You may want to check out their add-on features as well.

Third, you have to know the rates. Most offer free PC to PC calls. They will however start charging if you try to call a landline number. Some will not allow you to contact mobile numbers. Others will not allow you to contact emergency numbers like 911 using their services.

If you are new to VoIP, you may be wondering if your family and friends need to have the same products in order for you to be able to use it. If you want to chat online (PC to PC) it is best that you have the same service provider. For example, you would both need to be using Skype or Yahoo! Voice to avail of their free service. You would need to be online at the same time and both of you will need to have the proper equipment (a computer with a sound card and mic and speakers).

If, on the other hand, you are calling their landline or mobile phone your loved ones need only pick up the phone and enjoy spending time chatting with you.
