The trends in cellular devices are changing from that of the typical calling device to a smart phone. A smart phone is one that runs complete operating system software (similar to PC), having the features like email, internet, VGA connectors etc and a platform for application developers. So the recent discussions are as to who will take the lead among Symbian, BlackBerry, Android, Microsoft and iPhone. Presently iPhone has the lead due to the reason that it retains the most developers, which is generally believed to be the criteria and reason to succeed. Although iPhone looks dominant but still some people believe that ultimately Android will make its distinct place. However, some perceive that the holders of greatest market shares are the potential leaders. For instance, RIM enjoys a distinguished position in North American market. Consequently, the developers would prefer collaborating with such ventures.

What do commercial developers actually look for when they prefer a platform?

They look for:-

The large-scale production benefits i.e. low cost to produce a product for a specific market.

A well-designed procedure and channel to approach the markets.

Masses that can be efficiently dealt as defined markets.

The steps, which Microsoft Windows took to capture the market for PC, were the closely aligned to those, mentioned above. Microsoft adopted the policy of mass marketing with an efficient supply chain. The proper distribution channels complemented the technology of Microsoft by providing a quick and cost effective track to reach the final consumer with the best product.

SDK (software development kit) is a middle ware that allows developers to create applications and software for specific platforms; it is a cheap way of supplying software even by third parties directly to consumers without violating laws and rights. SDKs are on forefront these days especially through iPhone. iPhone has taken up this intelligent strategy unlike many others in the market. Formerly carriers were a median, which got costly due to increase in demand and competition by different platforms.

How are different key Brands like BlackBerry, Android and iPhone differentiated in the present market?

BlackBerry

BlackBerry dominates the industry especially that of business circles with more than 30 million devices being used worldwide.

Although BlackBerry has a good distribution strategy and access to masses but still they have room for improvement. BlackBerry Application world is a nice attempt but Carrier store can make it better and apart from that directly approaching customers, like Dell do, must also be considered. The thing mostly disliked by customers is when they have to search for applications, they would obviously want everything available at one location from where they can simply chose and use.

There has been a substantial increase in the cost to develop market for BlackBerry due to different operating systems even in the same model number. It is normally seen that the operating system in blackberry for AT&T, Rogers or orange are different for all.

Android

Android though being a new entry in the market still managed to attract about million users.

Similar to BlackBerry Android also face the dissatisfaction of customers regarding the availability of applications easily.

Software developers face difficulties because a personalized device can be ordered, and to deal with distinct devices gets difficult.

iPhone

According to a research in 2009, iPhone retains customers three times as of Android.

iPhone correctly identified the need of people by providing a single data base for all the applications available, by company or third parties, which results in the ease of users. Developers can have their applications recognized at respective Apple stores.

Cost effectively and efficiently customers can easily upgrade to any new versions available. Customers know the way and place to get what they want.

Current war on smart phones will continue, as they will keep coming up with something new to offer.

Voip is certainly making a name for itself around the world.Voip or Voice over Internet Protocol is simply a way of chatting with someone on the phone through an IP-based network.Seeing that there is Verizon, which is a very popular telephone company, Voip might have a ways to go before they beat out Verizon, but there are certainly many reasons why people should transfer over to a Voip related service.Evolving into the wonderful world of cordless phones, Voip is starting to make handsets for people to carry around, which are also more portable.Instead of using your standard phone company, you will use an internet based phone that actually uses the internet to process your phone calls. The idea is marvelous and the theory is great, many people find it very easy to use, and you could just add the bill to your monthly internet bill.Skype, which is a very popular messenger program, is included on this particular handset.
The Linksys CIT200, which is a couple of years old, is one of the more popular ones that people have. The system software is PC related, which allows it to run Skype; it also allows you to connect your phone to your computer via a USB cable. You can actually make phone calls from your PC if you’d like. The CIT200 is currently only supported by Windows, which is a shame, because many people do own a Mac related computer, as do Linux users.A few things to note about the CIT200 is that it supports call waiting, has a built-in speakerphone, can hold up to 120 hours of standby time and 10 hours of talk time, and more. While there are many more phones that are a bit more stylish, this is considered new technology and it will take some time before they are the “next” best thing.

Uniden, which is a decently popular company, produces the TRU8860 5.8 GHZ Cordless Handset. It is a very stylish cordless phone that is similar in looks to a regular cordless phone, except with more jazz in its looks.A few things you can look for in this phone is that it’s a 5.8 digital expandable system, has the ability to access 3-way conferencing with other Voip related handsets, ability to transfer your information that is saved inside of your handset to another handset, etc.The TRU8860 is wall mountable and also includes 2 belt clips so you can carry around the phone. All in all, this is a nice addition to anyone’s home assuming that you have Voip service.

There is still plenty of time before we really see Voip starting to overtake the other phone services, but they have definitely made a name for themselves, especially with all of the commercials we see every day.Vonage is one of the more popular services.

Skype, built by the users of Kazaa, lets you make VoIP calls via your broadband connections to other computers running Skype. You may call people’s cell phones also, but extra charges may apply to that. What disappoints many Skype users is the fact that they charge their users a fee annually to use their unlimited\pro service.According to Skype’s website, they allow a user who purchases the $29.95 package unlimited nationwide calling, which if calculated is less than $3.00 per month. This deal is great, but seeing that you are allowed to call any computer for free, they could have allowed us to call any phone for free.Since users in the USA or Canada don’t have to worry about paying a charge, even if they are calling a cell or land-lined phone, they still have to pay a minor charge overseas.

International calls are as low as 2.1 cents per minute, which isn’t naturally bad, but this is very limited to wherever you are calling. There are plenty of places where the price drastically goes up.As a matter of fact, the 2.1 cent charge is to around 30 different places. Since the rates differ per destination, you can use a calling card, or you could purchase Skype credit, which is very popular using this software.
One thing I was very happy about was the sound quality. I really enjoy the fact that it doesn’t matter whether or not you have the regular version of Skype or the premium version. The Pro version of Skype is definitely worth the price, especially if you use your computer for business calls and such. If you only use Skype for computer-to-computer chatting then don’t worry about the pro version, but the price is worth it. It had to be obvious that Skype would charge a fee for another version of their software.

Finally, a very nice feature that Skype has to offer is their call forwarding option. What is really nice about this is that you are basically allowed to choose which calls you want to pay for when forwarding them along. If you aren’t at your computer at the moment, you may turn on call forwarding and the calls will be directed to either an ordinary land-line phone or cell-phone. The recommended way to pay for the call forwarding service would probably be using the Skype credit, but you may choose however you want.

Skype is a great program with a plethora of rates. Depending on where you are calling really makes THAT much of a difference. The program isn’t expensive, especially if you decide to call only someone’s computer. If you aren’t interested in using the voice chat on Skype, you can instant message someone using the text based chat. Whichever way you are interested in is totally up to you.

Philips and Microsoft are joining forces to create a new VOIP433 Dual Phone that combines the Internet and PSTN phone features.

What does that mean? Communication’s easier. You’ve got a traditional phone that acts as a VoIP phone too—thanks to the Windows Live Messenger Service (the new incarnation of MSN Messenger).

It basically works like this. You can reach anyone in your Windows Messenger list of contacts—your best friend, your sister, even that cute chick you met on the dating site, all reachable in just one click of the mouse. How? You get 3 choices. Make voice calls through a PC to PC call, make a relatively cheap PC to phone call via MCI Web, or use the traditional landline phone service.

The phone also has a really cool advanced colour screen where you can “see” your friend’s online persona, with dynamic icons. You’ll even get delivery reports on the phone, just in case you missed their call.

The phone is completely portable, and doesn’t require a degree in rocket science to put up: plug it, use it, enjoy it! No expensive installation fees and frustrating calls to customer service. And the lines are clear (this is VoIP after all).

The VOIP433 will debut in Europe, Asia Pacific (Autralia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore) and Latin America (Argentina, Brazil). Not too long to wait, now, this baby will be ready for purchase in the spring of 2006. Time to update your messenger contact list!

Skype has axed fees on calls to landlines and mobile phones within the US and Canada for consumers in those regions.
Users placing a call to a regular telephone number from the Skype application previously were charged a per minute fee. While that fee will now be waived, phone calls to numbers in other regions will still be charged. Those rates are generally lower than those charged by competing telephony providers.
Skype is the world’s most popular VoIP application, boasting more than 100m registered users worldwide.
The free offer will make the application more attractive, argued Phil Wolff, editor of the Skypejournal blog.
“In one stroke Skype simplifies the choice to try Skype. No need to whip out a credit card or think about minutes. Just download and call. No trying to understand SkypeOut rates. No getting the boss to buy or reimburse credits. Simple. It will be easier to get someone hooked on SkypeOut to pay later, than to bring it up before installation.”

He added that Skype has a relatively weak position in the US and that the offering could help the company grow its market. The feature also could undermine business for competing products such as Vonage and Packet8, which offer VoIP services through a traditional telephone set as well as competing messaging platforms that offer outbound phone calls at a fee, including MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger.

Voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP) has totally laid its claim “as the next big thing” in the telecommunication industry. This type of service is consistently gaining popularity as a very affordable alternative to the traditional telephony and cell phone when it comes to plans.
As more and more people make the switch from traditional telephony system to VoIP, the number of companies offering this type of service also began to increase. The competition is definitely steep, as each company struggles to best each other by trying to lure customers to their den.
So, if you’re hunting for a VoIP you might want to brace yourself. Why you ask? Choosing a provider to go for has definitely become overwhelming task. What, with all the craze this technology caused you’re in for a bout of headache.
So what to do? Well, one of the good things that come with steep competition is the variety of options it presented. So, it’s all a matter of weighing your options. Shop around and see what each company have to offer, both in features as well as prices. Then compare it with the other companies, so you can make an informed decision. To make the task easier, I’ve come up with a list of things you might want to consider when choosing a VoIP provider.

Let’s start with the gateway. This unit allows a call to be made from the Internet to a standard telephone. Gateways can either be analog or digital. Analog gateways have analog telephony interfaces like RJ11. On the other hand, digital gateways of course have digital interfaces like T1/E1/PRI.

VoIP gateway performs different task depending on where it is used, either at home or at the office. In the office, the gateway refers to the computer that routes the traffic from a workstation to the external network that caters to the Web pages. The gateway node also usually acts as a proxy server as well as a firewall. Meanwhile at homes, the gateway is the Internet service provider or the ISP that connects the user to the Internet.

The gateway is also linked with both a router that utilizes headers in order to forward tables to verify where the packets are sent, and to a switch that provides the actual path for the packet that goes in and out of the gateway. By the way “headers” are actually part of the data packet and this holds transparent information regarding the file or the transmission.

In my drawer are over a hundred UN mailed Christmas cards. I know, I know… I should’ve sent them out weeks ago. I just forgot. I’m really bad at letter writing. Give me a pen and a piece of paper, and my mind blanks. The funny anecdote that had my friends rolling on the floor suddenly sounds so lame when reduced into a few hastily scribbled words, and it seems like such a copout to just sign my name under the generic Hallmark verse. I end up putting off the excruciating task of sending Christmas cards to the next day, and before I notice it, it’s Easter.

Since I got VoIP Internet Phone Services, I feel a little less guilty about forgetting to send the cards. I just call them. Mom, Dad, my sister, my nieces and nephews, even Aunt Hannah who I haven’t seen in 12 years but still sends me a sweater every year. We talk, the phone gets passed around to everyone in the house, I tell them that funny anecdote and sure enough, they laugh till they’re hoarse.

VoIP Services even helps them forgive me for a crime far greater than not sending a card: not flying home for the holidays. Now I love my folks and I miss them, but it’s impossible to get away from work, and even if I could, I’d rather not spend the little free time I have in a reunion with 15 other distant relatives I don’t really know and like even less. So I just phone in and talk to everyone, and promise my parents I’ll drop by when the rest of the clan has disappeared. Then I retreat to my own happy, private Christmas and thank Santa for VOIP.
