The future of VoWiFi - convergence

February 20th, 2006 · No Comments

Is VoWiFi the future of wireless telephony? Well, in a way, yes, but not exactly the sole technology that will bring about the next-generation mobile technology. Existing telecom companies are still likely to have a strong position in the market, being the incumbent, and having the broadband infrastructure already in place.

As we pondered on before, WiFi, indeed, has an edge over other technologies in the high-bandwidth application space, but may not necessarily have a sustainable business model as a large-scale enterprise unless coupled with existing technologies.

What we foresee in the future of VoWiFi, therefore, is a further convergence among different technologies, and it is most likely that cellular telephony will still have a role, at least in the medium-term, as existing cellular providers take the lead with integrating cellular and VoWiFi. After all, it’s the telcos that have the existing wired infrastructure that can support the bandwidth requirements of a fast WiFi network.

In the end, it would be us, the consumers, who win the game. We end up with better technologies with more features and applications such as video and data. And this we expect to get at costs that get cheaper by the moment. Isn’t technology great?
