The future of VoWiFi

We live in an exciting age, as we see a lot of new technologies that make our lives easier spring about almost every day. Not only does technology make life easier, it helps us do things faster and for a lower cost that was unimaginable in the decades past. A hundred years ago, it was the telephone that changed the landscape of communications technology. It was an entirely new experience for people to actually talk to someone miles away, hearing the other’s voice as you were in the same room.

Fast forward to the turn of the 21st century, mobile telephones have become as ubiquitous as a telephone connection—actually even more so, given the ease and low cost of deployment (less cables!). However, as quickly as mobile phones took the world by storm, yet another technology is threatening to grab dominance in the wireless realm—Voice over Wireless Fidelity, or VoWiFi, essentially Voice-over-Internet Protocol running through existing high speed Internet connections through WiFi networks.

Could VoWiFi really present a challenge to traditional mobile telephony? The signs are going both ways—there are indications that VoWiFi proponents could muster up enough strength to go mainstream, and with popular acceptance given the potentially very low enduser costs (sometimes free). And yet, the mobile phone providers are in the dominant position, and are sure to be swift in providing a response to VoWiFi.
